Penelope Cruz Sanchez is the daughter of
Eduardo Cruz, a Madrid hairdresser, as well as Encarna Sanchez. When she was a
toddler she was an obsessive performer. She would even re-enact commercials
from the television to entertain of her parents. But, she decided to

highly respected dancers following her nine years learning classical ballet at

Belle Epoque (1992), in which she played one of four sisters fighting for the
love of a handsome deserter from the Army. The film received numerous Goyas,
Spanish equivalent of Academy Awards. The list of credits continued to grow by
about three or four films every year, and eventually Cruz became a star of
Spanish cinema. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work
with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket
to international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the
thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain
that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). In 1998, her fortunes changed
when she was awarded the award for Best Actress Goya for her role in the film
industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998). Cruz was able to travel into
English-language films, but All About My Mother (1999) was her first big
international success. She played a chaste, but well meaning nun. Cruz became
in high demand throughout the Atlantic as well as the west coast, since the
film won numerous awards and awards. Woman on Top (2000) was her next major film.
It was an American comedy featuring a chef with remarkable culinary talents and
