Padma Parvati Lakshmi was born on September 1, 1970, in Chennai, India. Her parents divorced after she turned just 2 years old. Her mother moved to America to escape the shame of divorcing in India. Lakshmi was a part of her maternal grandparents in Chennai for two years prior to moving with her mother to the United States. The couple divorced, and she has two younger siblings.
